In Urban 'Heat Islands' like Detroit, Staying Cool Means Getting Creative

When it comes to dealing with the heat in Detroit, there's not much you can do about itunless you live in one of the city's "heat islands."

As part of a Great Lakes News Collaborative series, MLive.com takes a look at Detroit's "transpiration islands," areas of greenery and open space within walking distance of where residents spend a lot of time in the city's hot weather.

These "heat islands" are designed to help residents deal with the effects of the urban heat index, which can make it up to 20 degrees warmer in the mid-afternoon than in the rest of the city, according to Climate Central.

In Detroit's case, these "heat islands" can help cut down on heat-related deaths by up to 80%, according to a press release.

They're also more environmentally friendly, as water is stored in underground tanks that can be used to water nearby vegetation or, in the case of Detroit's heat islands, to make water available to plants and animals, MLive.com reports.
